Although there are many different types of arthritis, the two most prevalent variations are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. While common arthritic symptoms of pain and stiffness are usually caused by degenerative joint arthritis (osteoarthritis), rheumatoid arthritis, which is a progressive disease, is typically characterized by symptoms of tender, stiff, and swollen joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) affects approximately 27 million Americans. OA can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of the fingers and the bases of the thumb and big toe. When a joint is in healthy and functional condition, it contains a firm, rubbery material called cartilage, which covers the end of each bone. This cartilage allows the joint to smoothly glide during movement and acts as a cushion between the bones. However, once osteoarthritis is present, this cartilage breaks down, causing pain, swelling and problems moving the joint. As the condition worsens over time, the bones also exhibit changes developing growths called bone spurs.
As a physical therapy practice, we have vast experience treating patients with arthritis. By providing the most advanced and effective methods of care, we can help to alleviate your arthritis pain and assist you with improved joint function, increased muscle strength, and an over-all improved fitness level. The course of treatment varies according to the type and severity of your condition. Rehabilitation often involves exercises, rest, heat or cold, electrical stimulation, aquatic therapy, education about the care of sore and swollen joints, and life-style changes to minimize the stress on your joints.
